POSITION PURPOSE: The goal of the Corporation is to "Operate safely with zero lost-time injuries, no general liability losses, and no auto accidents". The purpose of this Position Description is to outline the requirements as a guide in the recruitment of a person who can effectively manage Western's safety program in the pursuit of this goal. Western will benefit from a Safety Director that has the following attributes: •- Trust and credibility with management and the work force •- Knowledge of the technical aspect of the work and trades •- Talent to instruct and motivate people and help crate a culture that believes in this goal •- Ability to determine the root conditions that lead to loss exposure and help supervisors respond to those conditions. •- Leadership Skills to manage the Safety Department and to guide the department staff, branch managers, supervisors and tradesmen in order to integrate safety into the work process so that safety is an integral part of each job. •- Coordinate the safety department functions, with other corporate departments and external business partners PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: The main functions performed by Safety Director include: safety training, accident investigation, audits, inspections, hazard analysis, compliance with governmental regulations, and emergency preparedness. This person will reports to the current Safety Director during the training period / transition period and will eventually report to COO. The Safety Director is responsibility to contribute to the overall risk management activities of the corporation. The person in this position will lead the safety staff, the Safety Advisory Committee and provide guidance to the overall safety culture of the corporation. The person who fills this job position will: - Coordinate the development, implementation and revisions of corporate safety policies and procedures.
- Develop, update, maintain and analyze logs of company safety statistics
- Assist with and develop programs and systems that will ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, EPA and other federal, state and local regulations
- Meet with and coordinate goals, activities and schedules with the COO, regional manager, and other staff
- Evaluate and audit job hazards and assist branches to eliminate injuries and loss producing behaviors and conditions.
- Coordinate the schedule of activities and establish goals with each the department professional staff and regional and branch manager
- Organize and lead safety-related conferences and meetings.
- Respond to branch requests for help with safety concerns.
- Provide safety and leadership training and "Best Practices" skills to superintendents and foremen.
- Manage and coordinate the design, editing and production of handbooks; safety meeting outlines formats, safety orientation, raining programs, newsletters, audiovisual presentations, manuals, payroll stuffers and other instructional and procedural publications.
- Investigate accidents and incidents in order to discover solutions to conditions that lead to accidents.
- Work with the Claim Manager to analyze claims, spot trends and recommend corrective action
- Participate in the organizational planning, administration and instruction of Foreman and Superintendent Development Program.
- Prepare regularly scheduled and special reports to all levels of management.
- Schedule and balance time with minimal daily direction
- Prepare and operate within the budget
QUALIFICATIONS: · Bachelor Degree in Safety or related field · 6 years safety experience (3 years minimum in construction) · Certified Safety Professional (Preferred) · Strong interpersonal skills · Ability to travel frequently. Overnight trips will average 3 or more a month with approximately 10 nights out a month. · Willingness to continue education · Position is exposed to construction and environmental hazards. May include dirty, dusty, cold, hot, high work, etc. EQUIPMENT OPERATION: Following is a list of the typical types of machinery or equipment that the incumbent must operate in the normal course of business: •- Automobile •- Camera and video equipment •- Industrial Safety measurement equipment including; Sound level meters; Dust and vapor collection pumps, Respirator fit test equipment •- Personal Computer including the Microsoft Office Suite of Programs. |
